Clinton’s Déjà Vu: A Cautionary Tale for Democrats

On Wednesday night, Bill Clinton experienced a sense of déjà vu on the convention stage as Democrats celebrated the nomination of their first female presidential candidate. The party faces a Republican challenger they view as inept, and spirits are high about the potential for victory.

However, recalling the surprising upset of his wife, Hillary Clinton, by Donald J. Trump eight years ago, Mr. Clinton cautioned Democrats not to repeat past mistakes as Vice President Kamala Harris prepares for the same opponent. He emphasized that while enthusiasm is important, it does not guarantee electoral success. Polling data can be unreliable, and overconfidence can lead to defeat.

“We’ve seen elections slip away from us when we thought victory was assured, often due to distractions from inconsequential issues or hubris,” Mr. Clinton told the crowd of delegates at the United Center in Chicago. “This is a tough, unforgiving arena. While I want you to enjoy this moment, remember that one reason President-to-Be Harris is thriving is our collective joy.”

He further warned against underestimating their opponent, pointing out the Republicans’ skill at fostering distraction and doubt among voters. “As the Obamas articulated so well last night, they are human and bound to make mistakes,” he noted, referring to Ms. Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota. “We must remain resilient.”
