Residents of Macuata-i-wai in Vanua Levu have experienced a revitalizing boost during the festive season with the introduction of a new engine boat, funded by Fiji’s Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. This initiative is part of the Communities Climate Adaptation Facility (C-CAF) program, overseen by the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM).

The community has been allocated $US100,000 (approximately $F227,143) in grants under this program, aimed at directly benefiting those impacted by climate change. Minister for Environment Mosese Bulitavu underscored the importance of such initiatives, stating, “This is how climate finance should work — reaching communities directly and supporting those already facing the impacts of climate change.” This funding emphasizes practical applications of climate finance, aiming to create tangible improvements in the lives of local residents.

Former President of Fiji and Tui Macuata, Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, expressed gratitude for the assistance received, noting that it offers renewed hope to the community. He asserted that improved access could inspire young people to reconnect with their roots, thereby strengthening their cultural heritage and village identity.

Macuata-i-wai has faced significant challenges, with only two households remaining from its original vibrant community of 20 due to the detrimental effects of coastal erosion and saltwater intrusion. This newly funded project aims to breathe life back into the community and promote resilience against ongoing environmental impacts.

Moreover, the C-CAF program plans to extend its reach to Narata Village in Nadroga and Vuniudrovu Village in Naitasiri, providing them with similar funding. The grants are intended for the restoration of freshwater systems, construction of climate-resilient housing, and improvements in livelihoods, ultimately enabling these communities to adapt successfully to their changing environment.

This initiative demonstrates the profound impact of climate finance at the grassroots level, highlighting the potential for such support to empower communities facing environmental challenges and restore hope for a sustainable future.
