Climate Crisis Takes Center Stage at DNC: A Generation Z Perspective

Maxwell Alejandro Frost, a Democratic representative from Central Florida, took the stage during the final night of the Democratic National Convention to address climate change and endorse Vice President Kamala Harris, just hours before her own speech. Frost, who represents Florida’s 10th District, has made history as the first Generation Z member of Congress.

In his speech, Frost highlighted the severe impacts of climate change, particularly the effects of storms in Florida that have led to flooding, harmful heat conditions for workers, and record high temperatures. He warned the audience, “I’m here to tell you that the climate crisis isn’t some far-off threat, it is here,” expressing his belief that progress can be achieved under Harris and Governor Walz’s administration. He concluded by declaring that “Fighting the climate crisis is patriotic!”

The Democratic National Convention, taking place in Chicago, will see Vice President Kamala Harris formally accept the party’s nomination for the 2024 Election on the last day of the event.

Regarding Maxwell Frost, he has represented Florida since 2023 and previously served as the national organizing director for the gun control advocacy group March for Our Lives. His tenure in Congress has focused on gun protection legislation and renters’ rights. At 27 years old, Frost appeals to America’s young voting demographic, which is essential for both political campaigns. He is a prominent voice for climate change protections in Florida, emphasizing that addressing this issue can lead to job creation, improved public health, and stronger communities.

The Democratic National Convention runs from August 19 to August 22 at the United Center in Chicago. This venue has hosted the convention 11 times, with the last being in 1996 when President Bill Clinton secured his second nomination.

Viewers can watch and stream the DNC live on its website between 6:15 p.m. and 11 p.m. Eastern time on the opening night and from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern on subsequent days. USA TODAY will also feature livestream coverage on YouTube throughout the event.

The convention’s overarching theme is “For the People, For Our Future,” with specific themes designated for each night.
