Clemson’s New Defensive Secrets: Meet Coach Chris Rumph

Clemson has welcomed Chris Rumph back to its coaching staff as Defensive Ends Coach, bringing over 25 years of experience in high school, college, and professional football. Rumph, who played linebacker at South Carolina, has a notable coaching history that includes stints at top programs like Alabama, Texas, and Florida, as well as time in the NFL.

Rumph had previously served as an assistant coach at Clemson from 2006 to 2010, a period that coincided with Dabo Swinney’s rise to head coach. Reflecting on his time at Clemson, Rumph emphasized the importance of the people within the program, stating, “It’s simple…people. As you go around this game and realize that the people make the place, you enjoy going to work with those you appreciate.”

Rumph holds high regard for Swinney, who has become the second-winningest head coach in the nation since they last collaborated. He noted Swinney’s consistency and genuine care for players, highlighting his commitment to not just developing athletes but nurturing them into responsible men, fathers, and husbands.

Although coaching was not Rumph’s initial plan, he discovered his passion for it while helping at the high school level. “The excitement is infectious,” Rumph said, affirming his desire to make a positive impact on young lives.

As he transitions back to coaching at a premier program, Rumph is focused on a particular quality in his players: toughness. He believes that resilience is essential for success both on the field and in life. “If you’re not a tough person, you can’t play for me because life is tough,” he stated.

Commitment and reliability are also core values he instills in his players. He advises them to be punctual and present in all aspects of life, whether at a game or a family event, striving to give their best.

Now back at Clemson after a four-year stint in the NFL, Rumph is enthusiastic about aiding the Tigers in their quest for further postseason success, reaffirming his belief in the program and his readiness to contribute.
