Clemson, SC – In an announcement today, Head Coach Dabo Swinney revealed significant changes to his coaching staff, stating that both offensive coordinator Garrett Riley and safeties coach Mickey Conn will not return for the 2026 season.
Reflecting on his decision regarding Riley, Swinney expressed gratitude for the contributions made during the coach’s tenure, particularly in securing the ACC championship in 2024 and the team’s return to the College Football Playoff that same year. Despite this success, Swinney stated a lack of production ultimately led to a decision for change. He commended Riley’s intellect, work ethic, and potential, suggesting that a promising future awaits him as a head coach.
In addition to Riley’s departure, the coaching staff will also see changes in the secondary with Conn’s exit. Having been affiliated with the program since 2016 and coaching safeties since 2017, Conn leaves a legacy marked by the development of numerous successful players, including R.J. Mickens, a rookie starting safety in the NFL. Swinney highlighted Conn’s significant contributions and the strong familial bond they’ve shared over the years.
As Clemson moves forward, Swinney expressed his anticipation regarding the plans for the defensive staff and the search for a new offensive coordinator, emphasizing the importance of finding the right leader to foster the team’s goals for the years to come. The decisions mark a pivotal moment in Clemson’s football program as it aims for renewed success in the upcoming seasons.
