Diondre Overton, a former receiver for Clemson University and a North Carolina native, has passed away at the age of 26. Clemson announced the news on Saturday, confirming they reached out to law enforcement in Greensboro, North Carolina, for verification details about his death.
Clemson’s football program expressed its condolences via a post on X, stating, “Clemson Football and the entire Clemson Family mourns the passing of Clemson alumnus Diondre Overton. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Before their game against Appalachian State on Saturday night, Coach Dabo Swinney paid tribute to Overton by touching his captain’s plaque as the team entered Memorial Stadium. Additionally, a moment of recognition was held for Overton, with fellow Clemson players Trent Pearman and Rob Billings, both wearing No. 14, leading the team down the hill in his honor, as Overton had also worn that number.
Overton played for Clemson from 2016 to 2019, amassing a total of 52 receptions for 777 yards and seven touchdowns over 51 games. His standout year was 2019, during which he recorded 22 catches for a career-high 352 yards and three touchdowns. Notably, all three touchdowns were scored in a single game against Boston College, where he gained 119 yards on three receptions.
After his college career, Overton played professionally in the USFL in both 2022 and 2023.
