Clemson University has confirmed a case of measles among its community, according to an official statement released on Saturday. The South Carolina Department of Public Health notified university officials of the diagnosis, prompting immediate health measures.
The identified individual has been isolated in accordance with health regulations, and contact tracing is underway to identify and notify those who may have been in contact with the infected person. Clemson’s Student Health Services indicates that approximately 98% of students on the main campus have provided proof of immunity against measles, which highlights the university’s preventative health efforts.
Measles is highly contagious, with an individual being infectious four days before and after the onset of a rash. The isolation of anyone infected will continue for four full days after the rash appears. The health department also stated that quarantine is essential for those exposed individuals who lack documented immunity, lasting up to 21 days from the last exposure. It’s important to note that anyone without immunity can avoid quarantine if they receive a dose of the MMR vaccine within 72 hours after their last exposure.
This news comes amid a significant increase in measles cases across South Carolina, reported to have risen nearly 30% in just a week. As of January 16, the state has recorded 124 new cases, totaling 558 in what is currently the worst measles outbreak in the nation. The surge of infections has been particularly concentrated in Spartanburg County. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has also reported cases of measles in several other states, including Arizona, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Utah, and Virginia this year.
