Diondre Overton, a former receiver for Clemson University, has passed away at the age of 26. Clemson announced his death on Saturday, noting that they reached out to the Greensboro, North Carolina police to confirm the news, but offered no further details.
Clemson Football expressed their condolences on social media, stating, “Clemson Football and the entire Clemson Family mourns the passing of Clemson alumnus Diondre Overton. Our thoughts are with his family and friends.”
Before the game against Appalachian State on Saturday night, Coach Dabo Swinney acknowledged Overton’s contributions by touching his captain’s plaque as the team entered Memorial Stadium. Additionally, a moment of recognition was held for Overton, during which two Tigers players, quarterback Trent Pearman and safety Rob Billings, who both wear the number 14, led the team down the hill in tribute to Overton, who also wore that number.
Overton played for Clemson from 2016 to 2019, making 52 catches for 777 yards and scoring seven touchdowns across 51 games. His standout season came in 2019 when he recorded career highs with 22 receptions for 352 yards and three touchdowns, all during a single game against Boston College, where he achieved 119 yards on three catches. Overton later played professionally in the USFL in both 2022 and 2023.
