COLUMBIA, S.C. – Clemson University wrapped up a challenging football season on a high note, defeating rival South Carolina 28-14 on Saturday. Quarterback Cade Klubnik had an impressive performance, throwing for 268 yards and adding a rushing touchdown. Cornerback Ricardo Jones also made a significant impact with two interceptions, one of which he returned for a touchdown. This victory marked Clemson’s fourth consecutive win, concluding the season with a 7-5 record.
The Tigers’ defense, which faced criticism during a rough 3-5 start, demonstrated its resilience against the Gamecocks (4-8). Jones made key plays, including an interception in the end zone that halted a South Carolina drive. His second interception sealed the game, as he capitalized on a deflected pass to score a 12-yard touchdown, further solidifying Clemson’s upper hand.
Clemson’s offense was bolstered by a strong showing from running back Adam Randall, who rushed for 102 yards on 24 carries and scored a touchdown. Kicker Nolan Hauser added two field goals, including a 32-yarder that gave the Tigers a slight lead at halftime. T.J. Moore also contributed significantly, totaling six catches for 101 yards.
In contrast, South Carolina’s quarterback LaNorris Sellers amassed a season-high 381 yards and delivered two touchdown passes but faced difficulties with two critical interceptions that hampered the Gamecocks’ efforts to mount a comeback. After a scoreless first quarter, the teams exchanged scoring drives throughout the second period, highlighting the competitive nature of the rivalry.
Despite the win, the season left both teams with unfulfilled expectations. Clemson, the reigning Atlantic Coast Conference champions, had aimed to defend their title but struggled early on with four home losses. However, they demonstrated resilience, rallying to finish strong, reminiscent of their performance in 2023 when they won five consecutive games after a rocky start.
For South Carolina, the season challenged their ambitions after a successful nine-win campaign the previous year. With a disappointing record in the Southeastern Conference and missing postseason play for the second time in three years, the Gamecocks will be looking to regroup and build for improvement in the next season.
As Clemson looks forward to its bowl destination, the Gamecocks have concluded their season, both teams coming away with valuable lessons and the hope of resurgence in the future.
