The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) is undergoing a significant examination of its historic role in political affairs to redefine its responsibilities and ensure alignment with modern defense standards. Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua addressed Parliament, acknowledging that the military’s involvement in past political instabilities has prompted this review.
In his remarks, Tikoduadua emphasized the importance of reassessing command systems, leadership expectations, and internal decision-making to transform the RFMF into a professional defense institution operating under civilian authority. He described this process as “clearing a lens,” aiming to eliminate the distortions caused by unexamined assumptions, internal tensions, and the legacies of past conflicts.
The minister noted that through structured reflection and open engagement with impacted communities, the RFMF intends to develop a clearer understanding of its responsibilities. This clarity is expected to facilitate function with fewer distortions and enhanced stability within the institution.
He reported ongoing adjustments that have already begun, which include strengthening support services, improving discussions around discipline and conduct, and enhancing direct engagement with the families of those affected by the military’s historical actions. Most importantly, Tikoduadua stressed a commitment to ensuring that past behaviors linked to instability will not resurface to disrupt current or future operations.
The Fijian Government is committed to observing the RFMF’s reconciliation process while maintaining a careful balance between support and oversight. Tikoduadua expressed that while the military must lead its own introspection, the government will remain engaged to ensure that the reconciliation efforts uphold the Constitution, respect citizens’ rights, and foster community unity.
This important initiative represents a hopeful step towards a more stable and professionally oriented military, focused on integrity and transparency in its operations.
