William Wylie Clarke has been re-elected as President of the Fiji Law Society, achieving a commanding victory with 80 votes against 39 for his challenger, Dorsami Naidu. This decisive win occurred during the Society’s Annual General Meeting. Clarke’s re-election is a testament to his robust leadership and sets the stage for continued progress in key areas vital to the Society’s mission.
In his victory address, Clarke expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him by his colleagues. He highlighted his commitment to fulfilling the responsibilities of his role and outlined his priorities for the new term. These include enhancing pro bono legal services, upholding the rule of law, and modernizing the Society’s operations to better serve its members.
Joining Clarke in this renewed leadership is Poonam Maharaj Wong of Neel Shivam Lawyers, elected as Vice President, along with Council Members Seruwaia Nayacalevu, Mele Rakai, Dilan Patel, Jotishna Nair, Arthi Swamy, and Jovilisi Liganivai. This dynamic team is expected to infuse new perspectives and energy into the Fiji Law Society.
Clarke’s re-election takes place against a backdrop of external scrutiny, with previous reports highlighting a Commission of Inquiry investigation. This drew attention from international legal bodies concerned about the independence of the legal profession in Fiji. Nonetheless, Clarke’s re-election signals confidence in his ability to safeguard and advance the integrity of the legal profession in the country.
The Fiji Law Society is positioned at a critical juncture, with its leadership reaffirmed and invigorated, prepared to address both internal and external challenges. This stability in leadership provides a strong foundation for the Society to implement necessary reforms and uphold justice and integrity within Fiji’s legal framework. The legal community is optimistic about the future as Clarke and his team embark on this new chapter.
