Indian cinema has proven to be a vital force in fostering community bonds and reinforcing the historical connections between Fiji and India, as emphasized by Sashi Kiran, the Minister for Women, Children and Social Protection, during the inauguration of the Indian Film Festival in Nakasi on Thursday.

Kiran articulated that films serve as a bridge, allowing Fiji to maintain a link to Indian traditions, values, and celebrations across generations. “Cinema stands as one of humanity’s most influential cultural expressions, capturing stories, emotions, and histories that resonate across borders,” she stated. The minister observed that Hindi films have been widely embraced by individuals from various ethnic backgrounds in Fiji, with many engaging with the Hindi language, music, and cultural values presented through cinema.

“In Fiji, people of all ethnicities, cultures, and traditions have grown with Hindi cinema. Many of our iTaukei brothers and sisters have picked up Hindi language and songs from movies over the last three generations,” Kiran noted. She highlighted that films transcend mere entertainment, possessing the power to drive social change by addressing themes of dignity, compassion, and justice. “Films are powerful tools for advocacy. Through honest storytelling, cinema can challenge harmful norms and inspire empathy and dialogue,” she remarked.

Additionally, Kiran acknowledged India’s assistance during the COVID-19 pandemic, particularly the provision of vaccines that benefited Fiji. “We remain thankful for the strengthening of our partnership in the medical sector,” she added. She affirmed that collaboration between Fiji and India continues to expand in various sectors, including healthcare, education, and youth development, while cultural initiatives like the film festival promote unity, national pride, and shared values among the populace.

This celebration of cinema not only highlights the rich interwoven tapestry of Fiji’s cultural identity but also strengthens the enduring friendship between Fiji and India, showcasing the positive impact of cultural exchange in today’s global society.
