Three individuals charged in connection with a violent incident in downtown Cincinnati made their first court appearances on Wednesday. The suspects, Montianez Merriweather, DeKyra Vernon, and Jermaine Matthews, are facing various charges related to a brawl that took place on July 27 at the intersection of Elm and Fourth streets.
Merriweather, 34, has a bond set at $500,000, while Vernon, 24, has a bond of $200,000, and Matthews, 39, faces a bond of $100,000. Both Merriweather and Vernon are charged with felonious assault, assault, and aggravated rioting. Matthews is charged with aggravated rioting and assault.
During the arraignments, prosecutors indicated that Merriweather and Matthews conspired to coordinate the attack, with video evidence suggesting that Merriweather approached Matthews before the assault began. A detective characterized their actions as an ambush, detailing how the suspects chased the victim down, leading to a brutal beating.
Conversely, the defense argues that the situation escalated after the victim allegedly provoked the incident by kicking Matthews’ vehicle and throwing the first punch. The defense also suggests that the victim initiated the conflict, leading to a chaotic scene that included multiple injuries. Meanwhile, Vernon is accused of assaulting a female bystander who attempted to help the victim, causing serious injuries.
