CINCINNATI – One of the suspects involved in a viral beating incident in downtown Cincinnati has been released on bond after facing additional charges. Jermaine Matthews, 39, from East Price Hill, was arrested following an attack on July 26, and prosecutors allege he “coordinated” the violent assault alongside another suspect.
The incident, which took place at Fourth and Elm streets, has raised significant concerns among residents and business leaders about safety in the downtown area, prompting calls for action. Matthews turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday and was initially charged with aggravated riot and assault. During his arraignment, Judge Michael Peck set his bond at $100,000.
Following further investigation, Matthews returned to court on Thursday, facing two new counts of felonious assault and one misdemeanor assault charge. This resulted in a total bond of $270,000. Should he be released, he will be required to wear an ankle monitor and remain under house arrest. His case is scheduled for consideration by a Hamilton County grand jury on August 8.
Surveillance footage allegedly shows Matthews engaged in a brutal attack, striking and stomping on a victim in an attempt to cause serious bodily harm. He is also accused of dragging an unconscious individual into the street and continuing the assault.
Matthews is one of three suspects currently facing charges; the others include Montianez Merriweather, 34, of South Cumminsville, and DeKyra Vernon, 24, from Evanston. Merriweather’s bond is set at $500,000, while Vernon’s is $200,000. Both face charges similar to Matthews. Their attorneys argue that they acted in self-defense, claiming they were attacked first.
Moreover, two additional suspects related to this case remain at large, intensifying the focus on safety in Cincinnati. The FBI is also investigating the incident to assess potential civil rights violations.
