Ongoing upgrades at Churchill Park in Lautoka are set to not only enhance the facility but also significantly boost the local economy, coinciding with the upcoming Sun Bell Battle of Fiji match scheduled for February 6. Taitusi Rasoki, chair of the Lautoka Board of Special Administrators, emphasized the economic benefits that come with hosting such high-profile events, especially through an established agreement with the Fijian Drua franchise that guarantees the council a share of gate revenues.

Rasoki noted that large sporting events attract crowds that positively impact local businesses. “When there is a big game, people will come to Lautoka because of the popularity of the game, and they will boost the business community financially,” he remarked.

Current renovations are primarily focused on enhancing player facilities and improving ground conditions. Completed projects include refurbishments to the Y2E stand, shore realignment work, and enhancements to pavement. Future plans include significant upgrades to the pavilion and lawn, air conditioning systems for changing rooms, and ongoing turf maintenance.

The economic ripple effect of the match is expected to be substantial. Rasoki mentioned that many attendees will arrive in their vehicles, generating additional revenue through parking meters. Moreover, the influx of spectators is likely to stimulate local accommodation businesses and contribute positively to the region’s GDP, particularly as international visitors are anticipated.

Richard Shafiq, representative of the Lautoka Chamber of Commerce, echoed these sentiments, indicating that retailers are preparing for an economic surge as the tournament is projected to attract thousands to Churchill Park. He stated, “Any sort of tournament or game that brings about three to four thousand people to Churchill Park benefits retailers.”

This highly anticipated match marks a significant milestone for Lautoka, potentially drawing international attention and opening avenues for more events in the future. “We also need to have this kind of tournament in Churchill Park so that we can compete effectively in the business landscape,” added Shafiq. He noted collaborative efforts with local authorities to extend operational hours to cater to the expected crowd, in coordination with the police and transport operators.

As the community rallies to prepare for this event, the excitement surrounding the potential economic impact continues to grow, fostering hope for a prosperous outcome for local businesses and the broader Lautoka economy.
