A North Texas church has parted ways with its lead preacher following his admission of an “inappropriate relationship.” Trinity Bible Church of Dallas announced this week that Steven J. Lawson has been relieved of all ministry duties after confessing to the situation.

In a statement, the church’s elders expressed their support for Lawson and stated their intention to help him through prayer, emphasizing the goal of his personal repentance. They noted that the church’s foundation was established long before Lawson’s leadership and will continue to thrive beyond his involvement.

Trinity Bible Church has not provided further details regarding the nature of Lawson’s relationship, including the woman’s age or the time frame in which the relationship occurred.

Lawson’s ministry activities have been suspended; his scheduled events, Bible studies, and appearances have all been canceled, according to a statement on onepassion.org, where Lawson has shared his preaching and writing. He has also resigned from his role as executive editor of Expositor magazine.

The board of OnePassion Ministries, in a statement on their homepage, confirmed Lawson’s confession and stated that his actions have rendered him unfit for ministry, leading to his resignation from all responsibilities. The board highlighted Lawson’s remorse for the impact of his actions on his family, the church, the ministry’s reputation, and notably, on Jesus Christ.

Additionally, Lawson has stepped down from his positions as a board member and teaching fellow at Ligonier Ministries and Reformation Bible College in Florida. Previously recognized as a fellow, professor of preaching, and dean of the Doctor of Ministry program at The Master’s Seminary, he has also served as a teacher for the Institute for Expository Preaching.

According to his biography on the church’s website, Lawson is married and has four children. He has written over two dozen books focusing on Christianity, preaching, and theological topics.
