Chua bows out as Fiji women’s team heads into MSG Prime Minister’s Cup in PNG

Fiji women’s national football coach Angeline Chua is set to lead the team for the last time at the inaugural Women’s MSG Prime Minister’s Cup, taking place next month in Papua New Guinea. President of the Fiji Football Association, Rajesh Patel, confirmed that Chua’s contract will conclude at the end of this month after three years at the helm, where she focused on nurturing youth players and integrating them into the senior team.

Chua’s tenure faced challenges, particularly following the Kulas’ fourth-place finish at the OFC Women’s Nations Cup in July, a performance that raised concerns regarding coaching strategies and player performance. Patel stated that the board is actively seeking a new head coach and plans to initiate interviews in the near future.

As the team prepares for the upcoming tournament, which will take place from November 10 to 22, they will convene for a training camp starting this Tuesday at the Fiji FA Academy in Vatuwaqa. Notably, the extended squad has been finalized, combining experienced players and emerging talents in hopes of enhancing their competitive edge.

This situation comes on the heels of recent insights into the Fiji FA’s plans for women’s football. Despite setbacks, there remains optimism about restructuring efforts and the introduction of fresh talent into the team. The association is committed to improving women’s football in Fiji, with ongoing investments in grassroots programs set to enrich the development of female athletes.

As they head into the MSG Prime Minister’s Cup, the Kulas have a unique opportunity to rally together, learn from past experiences, and potentially turn the tide in their favor. While the road ahead may be challenging, the focus on nurturing young talent presents a beacon of hope for the future of women’s football in Fiji.
