Chrono Odyssey: Promising Features or Just Another MMO Misfire?

MassivelyOP recently gained access to an early look at the highly anticipated MMORPG Chrono Odyssey, developed by Kakao Games’ Chrono Studio. Set to enter beta on June 20th, the game has drawn comparisons to the current state of New World, which players feel is in need of a viable alternative. Despite some promising features, early gameplay suggests that Chrono Odyssey may fall short in several areas.

Character creation stands out as a strong point, allowing extensive visual customization that is characteristic of many Korean titles. Players can alter every body part, choose diverse hair colors, and even customize tattoos extensively. However, it is noteworthy that the game currently features only one playable species, which is human, although players can adjust ear shapes to resemble elves.

The beta includes three of the six planned classes: Berserker, Ranger, and Swordsman. Unlike many MMORPGs, classes in Chrono Odyssey are not gender-locked, thereby allowing players to choose their class independently of their character’s gender. Each class has its own unique skill trees and weapon types, lending a sense of strategic depth. Players can freely swap between two equipped weapons and choose from various active skills, mirroring mechanics seen in New World.

One of the more complex classes, the Ranger, proved challenging for many players due to its intricate resource management, including stamina, vigor, and arrow types. In contrast, the Swordsman class offers a more straightforward experience, focusing on rage generation. The classes provide varying playstyles—essentially catering to diverse player preferences.

Encounters in Chrono Odyssey’s open world are designed to be challenging, with enemies that pose a real threat. This aspect of gameplay is reminiscent of New World, aiming to keep players on their toes. However, players have noted the game’s combat system lacks sufficient tools for effective self-defense, which could lead to frustration, especially in higher-stakes situations.

Graphically, some aspects of Chrono Odyssey feel dated; for example, character animations lack fluidity and realism, and the absence of voiced dialogue outside cutscenes contributes to an impression of being less polished. Furthermore, while the storyline includes a twist involving time manipulation, players feel that the delivery of narrative content is underwhelming and lacks depth.

Many frustrations arose from encounters with powerful bosses, with reports of battles feeling disproportionally difficult, leading to confusion about whether they were intended to be winnable at that stage of progression. The crafting system follows a familiar pattern, similarly to New World, with an abundance of gatherable resources across the landscape.

Chrono Odyssey clearly aims to be a competitor to New World; however, initial impressions highlight several areas that require polishing before it can stand on its own. The game has potential, but a reported launch in 2025 raises concerns about how much of the current experience is simply an unfinished product. Despite the challenges, players remain hopeful that further development could enhance its gameplay, making it a stronger contender in the MMO landscape.
