Gunfire erupted Wednesday afternoon in Sherman Oaks after former Los Angeles Lakers player Christian Wood fired shots during an attempted home invasion, according to the LAPD. The incident occurred around 1 p.m. on Otsego Street when a group of individuals attempted to break into the house by smashing the back door.
Inside the two-story residence, Wood confronted the would-be intruders before stepping outside and discharging 3 to 4 rounds into the ground. The sound of gunfire prompted the suspects to flee the scene in a vehicle, escaping in an unspecified direction. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and there were no arrests made, as nothing was stolen from the home.
Residents in the area expressed concern following the incident. Neighbors reported feeling unsettled, with one stating that they used to leave their doors unlocked in what they believed was a safe neighborhood. However, the attempted burglary has made them reconsider their security measures.
The home, which serves as an Airbnb rental, was the latest target in a rise of daytime break-ins that have many in the community on edge. Wood, who hails from Long Beach, was waived by the Lakers after the 2023-2024 season due to injury issues. He is currently an active player and remains a free agent in the NBA.
This incident highlights ongoing security concerns in residential areas and the need for heightened awareness among homeowners regarding their safety. As communities grapple with crime, it reinforces the importance of vigilance in protecting one’s home.
