Chrissy Teigen has announced she is currently 52 days sober after experiencing a recent relapse. The model and television personality shared her journey with alcohol in a heartfelt statement on Instagram on January 27, assuring her followers that she is feeling better than ever.
Teigen, who had celebrated more than a year of sobriety, explained that her intention behind drinking again was to cultivate a healthier relationship with alcohol. She hoped to enjoy simple pleasures, like having a glass of wine with her husband, John Legend, during special occasions. “I went back to drinking. I promised myself it would be in a ‘mindful’ way,” she reflected, emphasizing her desire to celebrate life’s moments. However, she soon realized that associating drinking with rewards was problematic, admitting that it led her back down a familiar path where drinking escalated from a casual activity to a more consuming habit.
In her candid account, Teigen described her drinking pattern as “quiet and consistent,” where she would start drinking progressively earlier in the day until it became a regular part of her routine. This ultimately prompted her to confront her choices and recognize that she was slipping back into a cycle she had tried to escape.
A turning point for Teigen came from her friend Carl Radke, who inspired her with his honesty about his own struggles with sobriety. The decision to quit drinking again solidified when she learned she would be a judge on the revival of “Star Search.” Teigen remarked, “There was absolutely no way I would be a part of the show while having alcohol in my dressing room.”
Reflecting on the difference between her current journey and her previous one, Teigen noted a lack of excitement in her second attempt at sobriety. “The first time I put my foot down, it was EXCITING. The momentum was fun,” she stated, recognizing that the challenge might feel heavier the second time around. Nevertheless, she expressed no desire to return to drinking, maintaining that she is capable of enjoying life without it, while still embracing her humorous and anxious self.
Teigen initially opened up about her decision to stop drinking in late 2020, crediting Holly Whitaker’s book “Quit Like a Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink in a Culture Obsessed with Alcohol” for motivating her. She admitted feelings of embarrassment from past experiences and a desire to change her relationship with alcohol.
Overall, Teigen’s openness about her struggles serves as an encouraging reminder of the power of self-awareness and the importance of support from loved ones in the journey of sobriety.
