Larry Wilcox recently revealed that his departure from the popular television show “CHiPs” was not by choice, claiming that his former co-star Erik Estrada played a key role in his exit. During his appearance on the “Still Here Hollywood Podcast with Steve Kmetko,” Wilcox detailed the longstanding feud with Estrada and the circumstances leading to his exit from the series.

Wilcox, who portrayed Officer Jon Baker for the first five seasons of the show, reflected on his challenging relationship with Estrada, who starred as Officer Frank “Ponch” Poncherello throughout the entire six-season run. According to Wilcox, Estrada’s friction with network executives following on-set incidents ultimately led to demands that resulted in Wilcox’s removal from “CHiPs.”

The decision was communicated to Wilcox by his agent, who explained that NBC Executive Brandon Tartikoff was left with no option but to comply with Estrada’s demands. Wilcox’s team then strategized to present his departure as voluntary to maintain his professional image.

Despite the turmoil and feelings of abandonment and disloyalty, Wilcox eventually reconciled with Estrada, choosing to let go of any resentment. This decision led to a renewed friendship between the two, ultimately paving the way for their collaboration in the “CHiPs” reunion movie that aired in 1998.

Reflecting on the resolution of their past conflict, Wilcox expressed his acceptance of Estrada, acknowledging the mix of positive and negative traits he sees in his former co-star. He noted that Estrada remains a consummate entertainer, which he has come to appreciate.

TheWrap has reached out to Erik Estrada’s representative for comments but has not yet received a response.
