Recently, two prototypes of China’s forthcoming stealth strike fighter took to the skies during daylight hours, demonstrating the nation’s expanding capabilities in aerospace technology. This significant development has sparked discussions among military analysts regarding the potential roles of these aircraft, which might rival American fighters.
The designs showcased are advanced flying wing models, optimized for attack missions. One prototype, developed by Chengdu Aerospace Corporation, resembles the retired F-117 Nighthawk but features distinct changes, including the absence of a tail and traditional vertical stabilizers. This aircraft is powered by three engines, and a recent video depicted it executing a low-altitude maneuver alongside the J-20 Mighty Dragon stealth fighter.
Another prototype, attributed to Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, has also been spotted, leading to speculation about the competition between these two designs.
Experts have raised questions about whether these aircraft serve as stealthy strike platforms or potential sixth-generation air superiority fighters, a category that the United States is currently evaluating. Justin Bronk, an airpower specialist at the UK’s RUSI think tank, theorized that these prototypes may represent a 5th generation regional bomber/strike fighter initiative referred to as J/H-XX.
A recent Defense Department report highlighted that China is actively developing new stealth bombers with medium to long-range capabilities, aiming to strike both regional and global targets.
Both prototypes utilize a flying wing configuration that optimally distributes load and minimizes drag, but carries inherent instability requiring automated fly-by-wire systems for flight control adjustments. This design approach mirrors similar strategies employed by the U.S. Air Force in aircraft like the Northrop B-2 Spirit and Northrop Grumman B-21 Raider bombers.
By eliminating components like a tail and vertical stabilizers, the flying wing design may significantly reduce radar visibility, enabling these aircraft to potentially engage defended areas before detection.
