The Chinese Naval Hospital Ship, Ark of Silk Road, has made its inaugural visit to Suva, Fiji, offering free healthcare services to the local communities. This historic visit reflects the long-standing partnership between China and Fiji, underscoring mutual respect, cooperation, and a dedication to improving the well-being of their populations.
Aboard the ship, medical teams are equipped to deliver a variety of healthcare services, ranging from basic check-ups to comprehensive treatments. This presence addresses critical healthcare needs in Suva, providing relief to local medical facilities and offering hope to families who often face challenges accessing specialized medical care.
Chinese Ambassador to Fiji, Zhou Jian, stressed that the ship’s visit goes beyond a mere goodwill gesture, symbolizing the deep-rooted friendship and robust bilateral ties between the two nations. He noted China’s contributions to Fiji’s health sector, education, and infrastructure development, highlighting the importance of international cooperation in tackling local issues.
During the ship’s stay, it will engage with the community through cultural activities, including basketball and badminton games, fostering cultural exchange and goodwill. This visit echoes past humanitarian endeavors by China, such as the Bright Journey Medical Team’s missions in Fiji. Since 2013, these teams have provided free cataract surgeries to more than 200 people, earning the moniker “Angel of Light” for their impactful work.
Brigadier General Sapenafa Motufaga, Chief of Staff of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, welcomed the hospital ship, recognizing its significant role in enhancing the bilateral relationship and delivering urgently needed healthcare services. The ship will remain in Fiji for eight days, with medical services commencing at the Vodafone Arena Hall B.
