Rocky Khan, a former representative for New Zealand’s men’s 7s team, has expressed pride in the tenacity and growth of the China Women’s Sevens development team following their unexpected victory over the New Zealand Women’s 7s development team during the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament. This victory has secured a semifinal position for the China 2 squad, which views the tournament as a pivotal developmental opportunity while gaining valuable experience in the competitive realm of sevens rugby in Fiji.

Khan highlighted the importance of the experience gained from participating in Fiji, stating that it holds as much significance as the outcomes on the field. He noted that the players are embracing the rigorous challenges of rugby alongside the rich local culture. “I’m just really proud of the girls. China 2 is our development team, so the whole experience is invaluable for us. To come here and play rugby in Fiji, to experience the Fijian culture and rugby environment, everything is a learning experience for us, and this win is just a bonus,” he remarked.

In light of the tournament’s physical and mental challenges, particularly given the intense heat and pressure, Khan commended the composure his team showed as they moved forward to the semifinals. “We’re in the semi-final now, so that’s a massive win in itself. We’ll focus on recovery, make sure the girls get a good sleep, and hopefully, we can come back and put in a good performance tomorrow,” he added.

The Coral Coast 7s tournament, held at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka, continues to draw significant attention, with fans able to watch live coverage on FBC Sports. This tournament not only provides a platform for players to exhibit their skills but also promotes the growth of emerging talent in women’s rugby. The journey of the China Women’s Sevens team serves as an inspiring example of how sports can bridge cultural divides and foster meaningful experiences for participants, showcasing resilience and progress in the global rugby community.
