China Backs Fiji's Ocean of Peace Vision

China backs Fiji’s Ocean of Peace in a grand blueprint for a non-militarized Pacific

Fiji’s aspiration for an “Ocean of Peace” has received affirmation from China, the world’s largest economy when assessed by Purchasing Power Parity (PPP). This notable endorsement was communicated to Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka during an event celebrating the Chinese community’s 170-year presence in Fiji and the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

At the festivities, Wang Yuan, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Chinese Embassy in Fiji, expressed China’s support for Rabuka’s initiative, highlighting its alignment with the Global Governance Initiative introduced by Chinese President Xi Jinping. This partnership aims to establish a robust foundation for strategic cooperation and mutual progression between Fiji and China.

Rabuka’s Ocean of Peace initiative seeks to maintain a non-militarized Pacific region, steering efforts towards climate action, sustainable development, and regional collaboration. Wang’s comments emerged following Rabuka’s recent visit to China, where both nation’s leaders outlined future relations, describing it as a “grand blueprint” for collaborative efforts.

The Prime Minister is eager to strengthen ties with China in areas such as trade, investment, and climate resilience, underlining their long-standing friendship that fosters shared prosperity and mutual understanding. He also recognized the crucial historical contributions of the Chinese community in Fiji, which began with the arrival of the first Chinese settler, Moy B Ling, in 1855.

During the celebratory event at Sukuna Park, Rabuka expressed gratitude to the Chinese community for their significant impact on Fiji’s economy and society, noting their generational contributions to business and community development. The event featured colorful cultural performances, including lion and dragon dances, attracting families and descendants of Chinese settlers, which created a vibrant atmosphere reflective of their heritage.

Jenny Seeto, president of the Chinese community, led the organizing committee and emphasized the importance of their collective hard work and unity. She thanked Prime Minister Rabuka for acknowledging their vital role in Fiji’s cultural and developmental landscape. Wang Yuan also praised the community’s dedication and contributions over the years, highlighting the successful partnership that has flourished.

This celebration further underscores the deepening trade relations between Fiji and China, aided by programs such as the Belt and Road Initiative, which support infrastructure projects and agricultural advancements. The ongoing collaboration indicates a promising future for both nations as they navigate critical challenges such as climate change and poverty.
