Chicago Blackhawks Bring Back Iconic Black Alternate Jersey for Black Friday Debut

The Chicago Blackhawks have announced the return of their black alternate jersey, set to make its on-ice debut on Black Friday next week against the Nashville Predators. This marks the first time since the 2008-09 season that the team will wear this particular design, which has sparked significant excitement among fans.

The new black jerseys will be a part of the team’s uniform rotation for at least the next three seasons. They are scheduled to be worn a total of seven times during the current season, primarily featuring in home games against several opponents including the Anaheim Ducks, Washington Capitals, Tampa Bay Lightning, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Colorado Avalanche. Additionally, the Blackhawks plan to sport the jerseys during a road game in Las Vegas on March 14.

The introduction of the black alternate jersey comes on the heels of the team’s recent launch of gold-trimmed red jerseys, which were revealed for their centennial season just a few months ago. Some fans have noted the timing of this release to be somewhat curious, especially considering the leftover stock of the red jerseys.

However, the sentiment surrounding the nostalgic black jersey is overwhelmingly positive. This design, originally worn by iconic players such as Tony Amonte and Chris Chelios during an era that spanned from 1996-97 to 2008-09, has become synonymous with the grit and legacy of Blackhawks hockey. Chairman Danny Wirtz expressed this sentiment, stating that the jerseys “defined an era and became a symbol of the grit, strength, commitment and legacy that still holds true to today’s era of Blackhawks hockey.”

Despite a somewhat rocky rollout—with leaks from the NHL’s official outfitter—fan enthusiasm remains high as supporters look forward to seeing their team don this classic look once again. This renewed focus on tradition could serve to reconnect the fan base and foster a deeper appreciation for the team’s history.
