The upcoming CNN documentary titled I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, set to premiere on January 1, is generating considerable buzz as new revelations emerge about Chevy Chase’s tumultuous exit from the popular sitcom Community. The documentary sheds light on a problematic incident from 2012 that occurred behind the scenes, involving an altercation between Chase and co-star Yvette Nicole Brown.
Director Jay Chandrasekhar provides an inside look in the documentary, recounting how Chase experienced a significant “meltdown” following the fallout from a scene involving a hand puppet that alluded to “blackface.” Chase reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the racial undertones of his character, Pierce Hawthorne, at a time when the writers were exploring controversial directions in the show’s narrative.
Chandrasekhar recalls not witnessing the alleged derogatory comment firsthand, but vividly recalls the tension that ensued. He states that after a breakdown in communication between Chase and Brown, producer demands led to a situation where Brown refused to continue unless Chase apologized. Chase, reflecting on his history with comedy and race, maintained that he had not made any offensive remarks and pointed to past friendships with figures like Richard Pryor as evidence of his intent not to offend.
As the situation escalated, Chandrasekhar describes an extremely agitated Chase storming onto the set, exclaiming his career was “ruined” amidst a breakdown filled with expletives. Following this emotional incident, Chase left Community after its fourth season, making only a brief return in 2014.
Chandrasekhar’s recollection of the aftermath is not without its own drama. At a wrap party for Community, tensions erupted when creator Dan Harmon reportedly rallied the cast and crew to chant derogatory remarks towards Chase as he entered the venue. Chase’s daughter, Caley, who was present at the event, recalled the painful moment, expressing how distressing it was to witness the hostility aimed at her father during what was meant to be a celebratory occasion.
