Magnus Carlsen, the reigning World Chess Champion, recently withdrew from the World Rapid Chess Championship in New York after a dress code issue. The chess grandmaster was fined $200 by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and warned to change out of his jeans—an attire prohibited under the tournament’s regulations—or face disqualification.
Carlsen explained that he arrived at the event in a shirt and blazer but didn’t initially consider changing out of his jeans after attending a lunch meeting. He stated, “I said I’ll change tomorrow,” but FIDE insisted he alter his outfit immediately, leading to his decision to withdraw as it became “a matter of principle” for him.
As a result of his exit, Carlsen will not be able to defend his title, which he has won five times in this championship, and he will also miss the upcoming World Blitz Championship, where he holds a remarkable seven titles. This withdrawal opens opportunities for other elite players vying for the prestigious championships.
