Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has established himself as a prominent figure in the culinary world, having achieved notable success by the age of 24 when he became the executive chef of New York’s Aquavit. Afterward, he made history as the youngest recipient of a three-star review from the New York Times.
Over the years, Samuelsson has continued to rise in the restaurant scene, opening popular establishments such as Red Rooster in 2010, followed by Hav & Mar in 2022 and Metropolis in 2023. He is also a well-known figure on the Food Network and an accomplished author with several cookbooks and memoirs.
In a recent interview with Quartz, Samuelsson discussed his latest venture, a 32-piece home goods collection in collaboration with West Elm, inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage, along with his experiences in New York City.
Reflecting on the shifts in dining culture post-COVID-19, Samuelsson shared that the pandemic has enhanced people’s expectations of dining out. With an increase in the number of skilled home cooks and improved food delivery services, diners now seek elevated experiences in restaurants, prioritizing quality service and a sense of community.
He emphasized the importance of ambiance in his restaurants, particularly at Red Rooster, where live music adds to the vibrant atmosphere. Samuelsson believes in supporting local musicians and contributing positively to the communities where his restaurants are located.
Discussing his new home goods line, Samuelsson noted that his creative background as a chef, painter, and writer informs his designs. He highlighted the collaboration with West Elm, expressing pride in how the collection incorporates elements from his father’s fishing village in Sweden alongside African-inspired prints.
Despite these diverse creative pursuits, cooking remains at the core of Samuelsson’s passions, as he continues to immerse himself in the culinary arts while exploring other forms of creativity.
