Checkmate: Chess Set for a Broadway Revival!

The much-anticipated revival of the musical Chess is all set to make its debut on Broadway at the Imperial Theatre, beginning previews on October 15, with an official opening night scheduled for November 16. This venue is especially significant as it was also home to the original production back in 1988.

Fans eager to secure their seats can participate in a pre-sale beginning June 25 at 11 AM ET. General ticket sales will start one day later, June 26, at 11 AM ET. The revival’s current run is planned to extend until March 15, 2026.

Leading the cast are notable performers, including Tony Award-winner Aaron Tveit in the role of Freddie Trumper, Lea Michele portraying Florence Vassey—marking her return to Broadway with an original role after her last appearance in 2006’s Spring Awakening—and Nicholas Christopher as Anatoly Sergievsky. Further casting announcements are expected shortly.

This revival features a refreshed book by Emmy winner Danny Strong, known for his work on Hunger Games: Mockingjay, with direction by Michael Mayer of Spring Awakening fame. Renowned for their contributions to the original score, ABBA’s Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus provide the music, with Tim Rice’s lyrics enhancing the narrative.

Chess, which originated as a concept album in 1984, outlines the intense rivalry between American and Russian chess champions during the Cold War, intertwined with a love story against a backdrop of socio-political tension. Michele has expressed excitement over Strong’s take on the storyline, noting his ability to enrich the emotional depth of the characters and align the music seamlessly with the narrative.

Notably, Chess has had a rocky theatrical history since its inception, despite its popular music. The original productions in London and Broadway faced criticism which overshadowed the acclaim for its score. However, the musical has gained a loyal following over the years through its various recordings and concerts, indicating a resilience and enduring appeal.

Chess is being produced by Tom Hulce, Robert Ahrens, The Shubert Organization, and Creative Partners Productions, in collaboration with Three Knights and Robert Fox Ltd. The revival’s approach aims to not only revisit but also reinvent a classic that has captivated audiences worldwide.

This upcoming production brings new hope to fans, offering a chance to experience a beloved story with a modern twist. With a talented cast and a creative team committed to revitalizing the narrative, this revival may very well capture the hearts of a new generation while reminiscing with long-time supporters.
