Chasing Beauty: The Quest for the Elusive Sonoran Kingsnake

Dallin Kohler, a herpetologist with a passion for snake conservation, will present “Pyro: The Quest for a Beautifully Elusive Snake” at 5:30 p.m. on June 24 at Ketchum’s Community Library. This engaging talk will detail his adventurous pursuit of the striking Lampropeltis pyromelana, better known as the Sonoran mountain kingsnake or Arizona mountain kingsnake. These fascinating reptiles can grow up to 36 inches long and are recognized for their vivid reddish-brown, black, and white stripes.

Kohler’s quest has taken him through diverse landscapes, including sandstone canyons, while also leading to unexpected encounters, such as a visit to a local casino. His journey reflects the remarkable beauty and complexity of snake habitats, as well as the challenges involved in locating these elusive creatures.

Originally from Boise and holding a degree in Biodiversity and Conservation from Brigham Young University, Kohler is currently pursuing graduate studies focused on amphibians in China.
