Heavy rainfall caused significant flooding across the Charlotte area on Tuesday, prompting multiple Flash Flood Warnings for Mecklenburg and York counties. Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich reported that some areas received up to 5 inches of rain by midday, with additional rain continuing to fall.

Several creeks and streams in the region experienced near-record crests. Notable levels included Big Dutchman in Rock Hill at 11.45 feet, Little Sugar Creek at Archdale reaching 12.75 feet, and Steele Creek at Carowinds Boulevard cresting at 9.8 feet. These high water levels led to flooding along various roads, including a closure of North Tryon Street near East 16th Street, a known trouble spot for floodwaters.

In Steele Creek, there were several water rescues. A video captured an officer preventing a driver from crossing a flooded road, averting a potential disaster as the vehicle was able to back out of the rushing waters safely.

Rainfall totals varied across the area, with Collinswood leading at 5.13 inches, followed closely by Camp Thunderbird with just over 5 inches. Lake Wylie and Uptown Charlotte saw 4.51 inches and 4.46 inches of rain, respectively.

Fortunately, the flood risk has diminished as the rain has begun to move out of the area, providing hope for easier conditions ahead. As the water levels recede, local authorities continue to monitor waterways to ensure public safety and access to routes. Residents are advised to exercise caution as lingering wet conditions may still pose risks.
