Academy Award winner Charlize Theron is set to take on a new leading role in the culinary thriller titled Tyrant. This project marks her first film venture following the release of Netflix’s The Old Guard 2, which faced criticism, earning a disheartening 27% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Tyrant is currently in development at Amazon MGM Studios, and reports suggest that the film will capture a tone reminiscent of classics like 1987’s Wall Street and 2014’s Whiplash. Set against the backdrop of New York City’s high-end culinary scene, the specifics of the plot and characters remain largely undisclosed. However, it has been noted that Theron’s character will be joined by another lead female character, further enriching the narrative.
David Weil will direct the movie and has collaborated with Cody Behan on the screenplay. In addition to her role as the lead, Theron will also serve as a producer through her company, Secret Menu, alongside partners Beth Kono and A.J. Dix. The production team also includes Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona from The Picture Company and Natalie Laine Williams.
Leading up to Tyrant, Theron has been busy with multiple projects. She is attached to star in Netflix’s action thriller Apex, where she will be joined by Taron Egerton and Eric Bana. Her work continues with the psychological thriller Jane, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, as well as the heist film Two for the Money, directed by Justin Lin. Additionally, she is part of an impressive ensemble cast in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey, set for release in 2026.
Charlize Theron’s diverse range of upcoming projects showcases her versatility as an actress and producer, promising a thrilling cinematic experience for her fans. The announcement of Tyrant adds yet another exciting chapter to her already impressive career.
