Charli XCX Takes on Dual Role in New Amazon Comedy Series

Charli XCX is set to not only create original music for Benito Skinner’s Amazon comedy series, Overcompensating, but she will also take on a guest-starring role in the show. Skinner announced her casting on his Instagram, which Amazon has confirmed. However, specifics about her character have not been disclosed.

Overcompensating, inspired by Skinner’s own experiences, is a college-based comedy that follows Benny (Skinner), a former football player and homecoming king who is still in the closet. He forms a fast friendship with Carmen, a high school outcast determined to fit in at any cost. They navigate the chaotic college experience with the support of Benny’s older sister and her legendary boyfriend while dealing with difficult romantic encounters, flavored vodka, and fake IDs. The show humorously and personally examines how individuals overcompensate in their journey to discover their true selves.

Skinner serves as a writer and executive producer alongside Hill, Matt Dines, and Ali Goodwin from Strong Baby. Charli XCX will take on the role of executive music producer for the series, which will be available for streaming exclusively on Prime Video across over 240 countries and territories worldwide.

This announcement comes after Charli XCX’s recent release of her sixth studio album, Brat, in June. She is also set to star with Olivia Wilde and Cooper Hoffman in the thriller I Want Your Sex, directed by Gregg Araki. Additionally, she is co-executive producing the score for David Lowery’s upcoming A24 film, Mother Mary. Charli XCX has previously contributed the song “Speed Drive” to the Barbie soundtrack and has written music for The Fault in Our Stars and Bodies Bodies Bodies. She is represented by CAA, Good World, and Project Gold.
