The City of Charleston has issued a local State of Emergency in anticipation of impending tropical weather forecasted to bring substantial rain, coastal flooding, and strong winds to the region. This declaration empowers the city to swiftly deploy resources, collaborate with county, state, and federal agencies, and potentially secure FEMA assistance if necessary.

Mayor William Cogswell emphasized that the primary goal is preparedness. “Our teams are clearing drains, staging pumps and barricades, and adjusting staffing so we can respond quickly if conditions worsen,” he stated. The city has underscored its commitment to keeping residents informed with timely updates as the weather conditions develop.

In preparation for the storm, the City of Charleston is taking several proactive measures. These include clearing storm drains and roadside ditches in flood-prone areas, placing temporary pumps at susceptible intersections and low-lying areas, and setting up barricades to close streets that may become dangerous. Water levels at Colonial and Dotterer Lakes have been lowered as a precautionary step.

Furthermore, staffing adjustments are being made within various city departments, including Public Service, Stormwater, Police, Fire, Recreation, and Communications, to ensure a rapid response. The city is also coordinating closely with Charleston County and state emergency management agencies.

City officials have outlined additional contingency plans, such as opening municipal parking garages for free storm parking, modifying garbage collection schedules, and adjusting recreational programs and facility hours if necessary for public safety.

Residents are advised to exercise caution by avoiding driving through standing water, not moving barricades, securing outdoor items, checking gutters and drains, keeping flashlights and medications handy, and staying informed on the evolving weather conditions.
