Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh has announced that quarterback Justin Herbert will not participate in the team’s regular-season finale this Sunday against the Denver Broncos. This decision follows the Chargers’ disappointing 20-16 loss to the Houston Texans, which eliminated them from contention for the AFC West title.

Herbert, who is recovering from the surgery he underwent on December 1 to stabilize a fracture in his left (non-throwing) hand, faced significant pressure in the previous game, enduring five sacks and showing signs of discomfort. Despite this, he managed to complete 21 of 32 passes for 236 yards and a touchdown, in addition to rushing for 37 yards.

Given the Chargers’ playoff positioning, resting Herbert seems to be a prudent choice. Harbaugh indicated that other starters may also be sidelined or have their playing time reduced in the upcoming match. “The guys that have the most bruises and need the most healing, we’ll pull them back. Justin Herbert would be one,” he mentioned in a press conference, noting that the team would assess player conditions throughout the week.

In his absence, former third-overall pick Trey Lance is set to start against the Broncos, with DJ Uiagalelei taking on the backup role. Even after their recent loss, the Chargers, currently holding an 11-5 record, remain focused on securing the No. 5 seed in the AFC playoffs, with potential matchups against teams like the New England Patriots and Jacksonville Jaguars on the horizon.

Herbert’s season has been notable, as he has thrown for 3,727 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions, contributing significantly to the Chargers’ performance this year. A victory over the Broncos on Sunday would result in a season sweep over the AFC West champions, highlighting the importance of keeping Herbert healthy for the playoffs ahead. The team remains hopeful that they can navigate the postseason successfully with a well-prepared roster.
