Chargers’ Offensive-Line Gamble Under Pressure as Injuries Mount

The Los Angeles Chargers have navigated a less-than-productive offseason, characterized by modest acquisitions, including running back Najee Harris and offensive guard Mekhi Becton. Unfortunately, this strategic approach has faced significant challenges, particularly with Harris now sidelined for the entire season due to an Achilles injury sustained in early September.

Becton, who commanded the highest financial commitment of the offseason—signing a two-year deal worth up to $20 million—has not met the expectations set for him. The Chargers’ offensive line has struggled mightily, further compounded by injuries to key players, including Pro Bowler Rashawn Slater, who is out for the season with a torn patellar tendon, and Joe Alt, who has missed several games with an ankle injury.

The disappointment surrounding Becton has grown, as his performance metrics illustrate struggles that cannot be overlooked. Among 113 qualified offensive guards, Becton ranks poorly with a 41.4 overall grade, placing him 105th. His run-blocking grade of 40.9 falls to 108th, while his pass-blocking efficiency, though somewhat better at 48.9, ranks 80th. These statistics draw particular attention, despite general skepticism around the validity of such grades, due to the substantial pass rush challenges faced by the Chargers.

While Becton has yet to allow a sack on quarterback Justin Herbert, he has permitted 12 pressures and three QB hits, with four penalties contributing to his underwhelming performance. Despite the failures in the run game, the Chargers have opted to retain Becton in the lineup due to their ongoing offensive line woes.

Becton transitioned from tackle to guard after a promising start to his career with the New York Jets was marred by a severe knee injury, sidelining him for nearly two seasons. His previous success with the Philadelphia Eagles made him an attractive hire, but it seems the change in environment has posed unforeseen difficulties.

Given the dire situation of the offensive line, the Chargers are likely to continue relying on Becton throughout the season. However, they have included an out clause in his contract that could be activated after the season, permitting the team to move on without incurring substantial financial repercussions. Such flexibility may prove beneficial if Becton’s struggles persist.

The Chargers’ season has certainly been plagued by adversity, especially in the offensive line department. However, with perseverance and adaptations, there remains hope that the team can improve and regroup as the season moves forward, highlighting the resilience that characterizes professional football.
