Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert exited the team’s 20-10 defeat to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday after appearing to re-injure the high-ankle sprain that had kept him out of practice prior to the game.
Herbert did not return for the fourth quarter as the Chargers (2-1) suffered their first loss, while the Steelers (3-0) remained unbeaten with quarterback Justin Fields leading the way.
During the game, Herbert completed 12 of 18 passes for 125 yards, throwing a 27-yard touchdown pass to Quentin Johnson that marked the Chargers’ only score of the day. After taking a field goal late in the first half, the Los Angeles offense failed to score again. They struggled with their running game as well, totaling just 61 yards on 20 carries.
Midway through the third quarter, Herbert limped off the field following one of the two sacks he took in the game. It appeared that he had aggravated the right ankle injury he sustained in a Week 2 victory over the Carolina Panthers, an injury he described as being caused by a player rolling onto him.
After the game, Herbert was seen leaving the stadium in a walking boot.
Post-game, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh informed reporters that there was a pre-game plan to pull Herbert from the game if he exhibited any signs of a limp.
