The Los Angeles Chargers announced on Saturday that they have activated linebackers Khalil Mack and Denzel Perryman from injured reserve, allowing both players to return in time for their matchup against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
Mack sustained an elbow injury during the Chargers’ victory over the Raiders in Week 2. The injury occurred when he attempted to tackle, resulting in his left hand becoming trapped between teammate Troy Dye and Raiders wide receiver Tre Tucker, leading to an awkward twist of his elbow. Meanwhile, Perryman suffered an ankle injury in the Chargers’ opening game against the Kansas City Chiefs.
Their absence has been felt deeply by the Chargers’ defense, which has struggled significantly against the run in their absence. Since both players were sidelined, the team has allowed a concerning 579 rushing yards from Week 3 onward, ranking them sixth-worst in the NFL. Prior to Mack’s injury, the Chargers were performing well, having allowed the ninth-fewest rushing yards in the league.
As the team prepares to face the Colts, they must contend with Jonathan Taylor, the league’s leading rusher. Taylor has amassed 603 rushing yards and seven touchdowns this season, averaging an impressive 100.5 yards per game. The return of Mack and Perryman could be pivotal in bolstering the Chargers’ run defense and helping them regain their competitive edge on the field.
