Court documents have unveiled serious allegations regarding Brian Tenney, the owner of the West Coast Game Park. An affidavit filed by a detective on May 16 outlines numerous findings from years of investigations, including reports from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and complaints from animal welfare organization PETA.
Among the startling claims, Tenney is accused of possessing military-caliber weapons, such as a 20 mm cannon and a .50-caliber rifle, as well as a concrete vault on his property reportedly used for storing documents. The approximately 100-page affidavit also reveals troubling instances of animal violence within the park, where some animals have allegedly killed each other, raising concerns about illegal animal captivity.
Coos County Sheriff Gabe Fabrizio spoke on the case, acknowledging the complexities surrounding the legality of possession related to the seized drugs, weapons, and approximately $1.6 million in cash and bonds taken from the game park. He emphasized that the investigation will delve deeply into how these assets were acquired.
Employee accounts detailed in the affidavit described a chaotic environment at the park, including a scenario where a male tiger’s interaction with a female resulted in the male’s death, and a baboon was attacked by another after previously being isolated. Veterinarian care for the animals appears to be lacking, with no consultations regarding compatibility or health issues prior to these incidents.
The USDA inspector’s report highlighted neglect, noting that many deer exhibit severe health issues, including significant hair loss and malnutrition. It also underscored the park’s inadequate supervision, with only a single staff member caring for over 300 animals.
The reports further disclose regulatory violations, including the illegal possession of various animals and missing or inaccurate inventory records concerning animal acquisitions and dispositions. This lack of proper documentation is essential for ensuring animal welfare and tracking health issues.
While the situation at the West Coast Game Park is disheartening, it has sparked a renewed call for stricter enforcement of animal welfare laws and better regulation of such facilities. This incident could lead to much-needed reforms in the industry, aiming for improved standards and care for animals in captivity.
The ongoing investigation not only seeks justice for the animals but also aims to prevent future occurrences of neglect and exploitation in similar settings.
