DOWNTOWN, LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Protests in downtown Los Angeles on Friday and Saturday drew thousands of demonstrators calling for the abolition of ICE, but the events took a turn for the chaotic as night fell. The peaceful gatherings were marked by significant turnout, culminating in clashes with law enforcement that resulted in multiple arrests.
On Friday, the “ICE Out” protest saw a massive influx of participants, while Saturday continued the momentum with hundreds assembling outside L.A. City Hall. Initial reports indicated a tranquil atmosphere; however, tensions escalated significantly after dark. Footage captured by AIR7 showed protesters confronting federal agents at the federal detention center. In response to being targeted with thrown debris, the agents deployed pepper balls and irritant sprays.
The LAPD reported that eight individuals were arrested during Friday’s confrontations, with charges ranging from assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon to failure to disperse. The situation replicated itself on Saturday, when authorities issued dispersal orders and deemed the assembly unlawful near the Federal Building.
The atmosphere intensified on Saturday night as some protesters began throwing fireworks, rocks, and bottles, prompting federal agents to respond with tear gas. As police worked to control the situation, approximately 50 individuals were reported arrested by Sunday, with several seen handcuffed along a wall.
