Changan Lands in Brazil with Local R&D Push and Global Ambitions

Changan Automobile has officially launched its brand at the São Paulo Auto Show, marking the entry of the Chinese automaker into the Brazilian automotive market. The event included the signing of a cooperation agreement with Brazilian automotive group CAOA, aimed at managing distribution and manufacturing within Brazil.

This partnership plans to establish a comprehensive local value chain that focuses on research and development (R&D), production, and after-sales support. Notably, over two years of joint R&D efforts have already been in progress, ensuring that Changan’s products meet Brazilian usage conditions and customer needs. Currently, a team of more than 300 engineers from both China and Brazil is working on co-development projects, utilizing over 100 test vehicles across both markets. Their extensive testing methods include bench trials, on proving grounds, and road use, with accumulated test mileage surpassing one million kilometers.

At the auto show, visitors got to experience the Avatr brand, which is controlled by Changan, showcasing models that emphasize cutting-edge design and digital technology. The Avatr line is designed to lead Changan’s entry into Brazil, with plans to introduce additional global models tailored to local preferences.

In a bid to amplify its local presence, Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen has been named as the brand ambassador for CAOA Changan in Brazil. Changan views this Brazilian introduction as a pivotal element of its international “Vast Ocean Plan,” which aims to enhance local R&D, manufacturing, and service capabilities while rolling out products specifically designed for Brazilian consumers.

Last year, Changan also announced its ambitions for the European market, planning to initiate its European strategy with the all-electric SUV Changan Deepal 507 in the fourth quarter of 2024. The company aims to establish a foothold across key European markets by 2028.

Changan’s strategic moves signify a positive shift towards local adaptability and presence in new markets, reflecting a growing trend of international automakers expanding their offerings to meet regional demands.
