Chad Johnson Sparks Debate: Is FAMU Now the Best in Tallahassee?

Florida State football experienced its second consecutive defeat on Monday night, leading to discontent from former NFL star Chad Johnson, who suggested that Florida A&M University (FAMU) may currently be the superior team.

Johnson shared his disappointment with Florida State’s performance after their 28-13 loss during a primetime Labor Day game, expressing his feelings during the Nightcap podcast that he co-hosts with Shannon Sharpe. “As a resident of the state of Florida, I’m embarrassed. I’m embarrassed,” he stated with evident frustration. He claimed, “The best team in Tallahassee is FAMU,” highlighting the local rivalry as both institutions are based in Tallahassee, Florida.

He continued, “FAMU might beat Florida State, based on what I saw tonight. That’s how I’m feeling.”

Florida State began its season with a narrow defeat against ACC rival Georgia Tech, followed by a loss at home to Boston College. Conversely, FAMU remains undefeated at 2-0 after overcoming challenges against Norfolk State and South Carolina State.

Chad Johnson, who is known for his vibrant personality and connection with historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), has often shown support for FAMU and its cultural significance. With roots in Miami, he consistently promotes the university through social media and attends various events, underscoring his commitment to HBCUs and their important role in education and cultural heritage. Johnson’s influence serves to raise the profile of these institutions on a national level.
