As Central Texas approaches its severe weather season, local authorities are urging residents to prioritize preparedness and stay informed. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) and the City of Austin’s Homeland Security and Emergency Management have shared essential safety guidelines to help community members navigate potential risks.
David Wiechmann, the Acting Public Information & Marketing Program Manager with the City of Austin Homeland Security & Emergency Management, highlighted the importance of being ready for any emergency. “We’re working with our partners to make sure that we’re always at the ready,” Wiechmann stated. He noted collaborative efforts with the Watershed Protection Department to monitor flood risks and with the Homeless Strategy Office to support the city’s most vulnerable populations, ensuring their safety during inclement weather.
Emphasizing the need for personal readiness, Wiechmann pointed out, “Central Texas is home to lots of flash flooding possibilities.” He urged residents to create a preparedness plan, understand the risks associated with floodplains, and have necessary supplies and evacuation routes mapped out.
Jeff Barker from TxDOT supported these recommendations, encouraging drivers to avoid traveling during severe weather conditions. “Our advice will always be to avoid or delay travel if possible when there is a threat of severe weather,” Barker mentioned, reminding everyone to stay updated on changing weather conditions and to check roadway statuses regularly.
Both officials reinforced a crucial safety message: “Turn around, don’t drown.” Barker emphasized that even a small amount of water can pose a significant danger to vehicles.
