Central Texas Braces for More Rain as Flood Risk Looms Ahead of Thanksgiving

Recent heavy rainfall across Central Texas has caused a variety of impacts, with the storm system now moving eastward. Following days of rainfall, reports indicate totals of 0.50 to 1 inch across Austin, but the Hill Country experienced significantly more, with Ingram recording the highest total of 5.38 inches. Harper and Tow followed with 3.83 inches and 2.92 inches, respectively.

As residents prepare for the weekend, the forecast suggests a break in the rain for Austin and Central Texas, coinciding with an important University of Texas home football game against the Arkansas Razorbacks. The game, occurring Saturday at 2:30 p.m. at Darrel K. Royal Memorial Stadium, is expected to feature mild temperatures in the mid-70s, making for a pleasant game day experience.

However, another storm system is on the horizon, which is projected to bring more rain starting Sunday. The National Weather Service cautions that the system has slowed, prolonging the rain chances into Sunday evening and Monday afternoon. With the unique combination of existing high humidity and saturated soil, there is a potential for locally heavy rainfall and flooding. The Weather Prediction Center has marked specific areas such as the Rio Grande, Southern Edwards Plateau, and the Interstate 35 corridor as having a risk of flooding.

Looking further ahead, the incoming Pacific storm system is anticipated to bring 1 to 2 inches of additional rain to Central Texas, and as the system passes, temperatures are expected to drop, marking a shift towards cooler weather. Morning lows will range from the upper 30s to low 50s, while afternoon highs will linger in the low 60s to near 70 degrees.

As travelers prepare for Thanksgiving, awareness of potential weather disruptions due to the storms will be crucial. With forecasts predicting wetter than normal conditions beyond the holiday, the community is encouraged to stay informed and plan accordingly for the upcoming weather patterns. This evolving situation provides an opportunity for residents to engage in safety measures while also enjoying the season’s festivities.
