Central Indiana Braces for Gusty Winds and Snow Ahead of Thanksgiving

A cold front has swept into central Indiana, leading to snow flurries and gusty winds across the region. A wind advisory is in effect from 7 AM to 7 PM on Wednesday, with sustained winds expected between 20 to 30 mph and gusts reaching as high as 40 to 50 mph. This strong wind, coming from the west and shifting to the northwest, may make travel hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles on north/south routes.

On Wednesday morning, temperatures are sliding into the upper 30s, anticipated to remain steady throughout the day. Snow flurries are likely, especially north of I-74, with some areas in the far north and northeast experiencing light snow showers that could briefly reduce visibility. Wind chills will be in the low to mid-20s, contributing to a chilly and overcast day following the early-morning cold front.

Looking ahead, the winds will ease slightly overnight but will still be brisk, with gusts between 15 and 20 mph. Overnight lows are projected to fall into the low to mid-20s, causing wind chills to potentially drop to single digits in some areas.

Thanksgiving Day promises a sunny although cold atmosphere, with highs only reaching the 30s. The combination of temperatures and breezy conditions will make wind chills feel like they are in the 20s.

Friday will bring a brief respite from the cold with calm weather; highs are expected in the low to mid-30s under sunny skies, marking it as the most pleasant day of the holiday weekend.

However, a new weather system is on the horizon, set to impact central Indiana late Friday night through Saturday. This system is expected to bring initial snow, leading to light accumulations, especially north of I-70, where 1 to 2 inches might fall. Southern areas could see less than an inch. The snow, which could create slushy conditions for travelers on Saturday morning, is expected to transition to a mix and eventually rain as warmer air moves in from the south throughout the day.

By early Sunday, most areas will likely experience rain, with early temperatures rising into the mid-30s to lower 40s before a drop later in the day. A few light rain or snow showers may occur Sunday night.

For the week ahead, the forecast suggests colder temperatures returning, with highs expected to stay below freezing for many on Monday and Tuesday, while overnight lows could dip into the teens. Another system may bring a wintry mix or snow early next week, indicating a cold and dynamic start to December for the region.
