Severe cold weather conditions are affecting Orlando and Central Florida, causing significant power outages across the region. Thousands have experienced outages as freezing temperatures set in, leading to increased energy demands for heating homes. Local utility companies, including Orlando Utilities Commission (OUC), Florida Power and Light Company (FPL), Duke Energy, and Kissimmee Utility Authority, are working to manage the situation effectively.
Reports indicate that strong winds have damaged power lines and equipment, compounding the issues as heating systems draw two to three times more electricity than usual during icy weather. Florida Power & Light emphasized that these combined factors have led to localized outages.
Duke Energy is actively monitoring the high winds, particularly along Florida’s west coast, where gusts could reach 35 to 40 mph. They are assessing the potential impacts on their system and remain vigilant during this challenging time.
OUC highlighted that the hardest-hit area within their network is Eagle Creek in Lake Nona. To alleviate the strain on the power grid, they have advised customers to limit energy usage, especially during peak hours between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Monday. A recommended thermostat setting of 68 degrees can help conserve energy while keeping homes warm.
