Celebrity chef Marcus Samuelsson has made a significant mark in the culinary world, achieving notable success by the age of 24. He became the executive chef at Aquavit in New York City and made history as the youngest chef to earn a three-star review from the New York Times.
In the years since, he has established himself as a leading restaurateur in New York, launching several restaurants including Red Rooster in 2010, Hav & Mar in 2022, and Metropolis in 2023. Samuelsson has authored multiple cookbooks, penned memoirs, and has been a familiar face on the Food Network.
Recently, Samuelsson is venturing into a new domain by launching a 32-piece home goods collection in collaboration with West Elm, inspired by his Ethiopian and Scandinavian heritage as well as his life in New York.
In an interview with Quartz, Samuelsson reflected on the changes in dining out experiences post-COVID-19. He noted that the pandemic fostered a generation of skilled home cooks, which has led diners to seek elevated experiences when dining out, emphasizing the desire for service and entertainment in a restaurant setting.
He highlighted that the ambiance of Red Rooster is a vital part of its identity, driven by the rich culture of Harlem. Live music not only enhances the dining experience but also supports local musicians who are part of the community.
Samuelsson also discussed the significance of community in his Chelsea restaurant, Hav & Mar, where he incorporates local art into the dining experience. He believes that understanding a neighborhood’s history is essential before introducing a new venue.
Regarding his collaboration with West Elm, Samuelsson expressed how his creative journey extends beyond cooking into painting and writing. He enjoyed the collaborative process and was able to integrate elements from his heritage into the design, merging Scandinavian woods with African prints to create a cohesive collection.
Despite his diverse creative pursuits, Samuelsson maintains a strong connection to cooking, stating it remains his primary passion and where he feels most confident compared to his other artistic endeavors.
