As we approach the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots on June 28, a key event that inspired the establishment of Pride Month, it is essential to honor Marsha P. Johnson, a pioneering Black drag queen who played a crucial role in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. Johnson’s legacy reflects courage, resilience, and tireless activism.
Born in 1945, Marsha P. Johnson participated in the Stonewall Riots in 1969, which marked a significant turning point for LGBTQ+ rights. Her involvement in the uprising showcased her defiance against systemic oppression and her unwavering solidarity with the queer community during a time of severe discrimination.
In addition to her activism during the riots, Johnson co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with Sylvia Rivera.
