The University of the West Indies (UWI), Mona Campus, is preparing to commemorate the centenary of Malcolm X’s birth with a significant lecture honoring the civil rights icon’s lasting legacy. This event reflects UWI’s commitment to promoting discussions around historical justice, racial equity, and Pan-African awareness.
Entitled “Celebrating the Legacy of Malcolm X: A Renowned Activist and Pan-African Champion,” the lecture is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. in the Multi-Functional Room near the Main Library. It is open to the public, inviting students, scholars, and community members to contemplate Malcolm X’s profound influence on the worldwide movement for Black empowerment.
Rev. Kobi Little, a prominent advocate for racial justice and community empowerment, will deliver the keynote address. Known for his involvement with organizations like the NAACP, Rev. Little brings a wealth of experience in grassroots activism.
The evening will kick off with statements from respected figures such as Michael Barnett, a senior lecturer at UWI who specializes in Afrocentric studies, and Steven Golding, president of the Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League in Jamaica. Both speakers have dedicated their efforts to preserving African heritage and advocating for causes related to Black liberation.
This tribute to Malcolm X is timely, coinciding with a resurgence of interest in his teachings, particularly among younger generations tackling today’s challenges of inequality and systemic racism. Born Malcolm Little, Malcolm X remains an influential figure in the African diaspora, celebrated for his powerful advocacy for Black self-determination.
The lecture forms part of a wider initiative by UWI Mona to elevate the contributions of key personalities in African-American and Pan-African movements whose work continues to resonate through time and across global boundaries. The public is encouraged to attend this important event, highlighting Jamaica’s role in honoring one of the 20th century’s most significant champions for justice and liberation.
